Pliny the Younger is a Triple IPA, simply meaning that it is higher in alcohol and has tons of hops. The alcohol usually finishes at about 10.25%, although it is remarkably dry for the amount of malt used in this recipe. It is loaded with hop flavors, bitterness, and aromatics. We brewed Younger for the first time in 2005 as a winter seasonal beer, building upon the Pliny the Elder recipe while pushing the envelope with malt, hops, and alcohol just to see how far we could go! Each year we slightly change up the hops based on the cream of the hop crop selected from the prior year’s vintage. But the base recipe stays nearly exactly the same. It is always brewed only once a year and released the first Friday in February, rain or shine!
Like most major beer releases and other events during this COVID-era, we are hitting the pause button on our annual 2021 Pliny the Younger release. While we are sad to miss seeing our friends and fans from around the world, it has become clear that it will not be safe for us to gather again by February 2021. In compliance with current state and county COVID-19 health orders, our Windsor pub is temporarily closed until further notice and the Santa Rosa pub is only open for takeout due to the rapid and unrelenting spread of coronavirus in our county. That said, we can’t go a whole year without making at least some Pliny the Younger! A limited number of Younger bottles will be available for sale as part of a non-customizable mixed case beginning January 28th at 11AM PST on our website for direct shipping to customers within the state of California. We will also be taking the year off from producing any draft Younger for distribution due to the majority of our accounts being shut down or only allowed to do takeout. We do not want to be the reason for a spontaneous super-spreader event! For more details, please visit the 2021 Younger release page HERE
